Solar Energy

Developed a new method to increase by 20-30% the efficiency of photoelectric transformation of solar energy in standard photovoltaic cells by means of special coating on cell surfaces.
Armenia Patent No. 550, 1998

Photocatalytic method for hydrogen peroxide production by using solar energy

The aim of the project is to create special device for hydrogen peroxide production by using solar energy. Among the various applications, the hydrogen peroxide is considered as an accumulator of chemical energy. From this point of view, it is important to find efficient methods for its production. So, we propose a new simple method for production of hydrogen peroxide, in contrast to multistage techniques of water decomposition. We intend: a) photocatalytic decomposition of water to obtain hydrogen peroxide by using solar radiation, b) evaluation of efficiency of direct use of solar energy compared to using of solar energy converted into electricity for further supplying in mercury lamps.

Armenian participants of the project are responsible for simulating and calculating the process of photocatalytic decomposition of water, and for the practical application to create a pilot installation to obtain hydrogen peroxide.

EcoAtom’s Solar Cell

For the rising of PV cell performance by increasing light transmission and reducing reflective losses the surface of the cells is usually covered by anti-reflective coating. EcoAtom’s specialists discovered the especial inexpensive layer on usual solar cell which allows to enhance overall electrical energy produced during the full day up to 30%. It also enhances the efficiency of the cell up to 1%. In contrast to common solar cells our cells with proprietary additional layer may effectively capture the sun light incident under different angles and even make solar cell sensitive to the scattered light. This makes possible to refuse expensive tracking systems which turn solar panels in position normal to the incident sun rays.

Bellow figure shows the difference in behavior of the EcoAtom’s (a) and common (b) cells during the day. Sun positions correspond to the morning, noon and evening.

Areas under the cells are proportional to the captured light (or the produced electricity).

As it is shown in the Figure, EcoAtom’s solar cell produces much more electricity during the full day, although in the noon its characteristics are similar to the usual cell without special coating. It is worth to mention that this transparent coating is inexpensive and can be made very easy and quickly on the substrates of any size, shape and material. Although cheap, this layer is connected with the surface of solar cell at the molecular level that gives high-performance, high-transmission, anti-reflection and anti glare-properties.

The mentioned principle is described in Armenian Patent No. 550, 1998.

The photograph shows the model of EcoAtom’s silicone solar cell with special coating. The right cell is the same cell without coating.
